Interview with Ashlyn Gere - July 18, 2001
Los Angeles, CA
Talkingblue.com: So we are here with Ashlyn Gere.
Ashlyn Gere: Hi!
Q: You almost don't really need an introduction anymore, or at least the
acolation of legendary.
Ashlyn Gere: Oh please!
Q: Is that almost an ackward thing? Does that kind of follow you around?
Ashlyn Gere: Well, for me it's something you never get used to. It's a compliment and
it's always nice to hear. And it's an honor to be put in that kind of
category with so many other famous women and men in the adult business, so
it's always welcome.
Q: So how long...I don't want to do the math and figure out your age or
anything, but how long have you been in the industry.
Ashlyn Gere: It will be almost 9 years since I started doing movies. Dancing on the
road, I started that about a year after starting the movies.
Q: I think it's kind of strange that you started out as one of the Vivid
Girls.
Ashlyn Gere: Actually, first I was independent for about 2 years. I worked for, mainly
VCA, John Leslie, people like that. I got very lucky and they were very nice
to me. And then Stevie Hirsch and Paul Thomas contacted me from Vivid and I
was with them for approximately 3 years. And then I started doing a lot of
regular TV.
I did "Space: Above & Beyond", "Millennium", "The X-Files". FOX-TV has been
very kind to me and they are the best company to work for. Um, I did two
movies in that time period for VCA again. And then Rob Black and Tommy Byron
from Extreme Associates called. And made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
Q: They brought you back.
Ashlyn Gere: And hear I am.
Q: It was kind of strange, you were like, Vivid Girl, and they're almost
like Playboy of porn. Then mainstream acting and it was kind of a "low key"
sort of thing for you. Then you come back, and with Extreme of all places.
That seemed like a radical return.
Ashlyn Gere: Well, you know what. When I originally started in the business, I was
known for very hot sex scenes. Maybe not the nastiest sex scenes, but I was
very much into my partner and sweating, all out. When we're having sex, we
are really gonna have sex today. So, what I was explained to, when I was
asked to work for Vivid, was actually to help with their European sales,
because they were so Playboyish, that myself and another girl...Teri Weigal,
was being considered to help boost, you know. I took it as a compliment, so I
had a wonderful time at Vivid and they're a wonderful company and I did enjoy
working for them. A few things didn't work out, so I left them. But when I
think about signing with Extreme, to me it was a natural progression because
I've always worked that way. So when you look at it, "She was a Vivid Girl,
oh she did mainstream TV: then you get the impression that the Playboy thing
is going again.
Q: This last year's CES show in Las Vegas, a bunch of Extreme people were
walking around with T-shirts that said, "Vivid Girls Suck".
Ashlyn Gere: I heard about that, I wasn't there.
Q: Does that mean you "Suck & Fuck"?
Ashlyn Gere: I do it all, hey!
Q: So the mainstream acting stuff, how did that come about? Was that
something you wanted to do?
Ashlyn Gere: Acting has always been my first love. I have double major, communication
broadcasting and theatre arts. So when I first came to LA I wanted to be a
famous movie star. But I always tell people. "When you dream, be very
specific on what you dream about." Because in my dream, I never said adult,
but that's how it turned out. Which I have no regrets, but I just wasn't
specific over that line. My love for acting and theatre, I've been very lucky
with it.
Q: Now speaking about that kind of broadcast, filmmaker background, this
film that you are doing today, you're behind it, you're not just in front of
the camera. You're all over this.
Ashlyn Gere: I'm co-directing and I actually gave ideas to the person who wrote the
script. Lane Parker is the director on the set, but we discuss most of the
scenes off the set or if there is something specific I want done, he
accommodates me. But, he is one of my favorite directors and he used to
direct for me at Vivid also. He directed all my video stuff over there.
Q: This is also the biggest thing Extreme has ever done, right.
Ashlyn Gere: This is the biggest video Extreme has done since it came together as a
company. It's a three-day shoot and a very large cast, some beautiful girls,
a lot of Extreme contract girls also. It's going really, really well We shot
at the Queen Mary today.
Q: The club.
Ashlyn Gere: The strip club Queen Mary in Studio City, California. We got some really
nice stuff, extras and everything. So Rob Black is really going all out for
this production and I'm really happy for that and grateful to him and Tommy
(Byron).
Q: What ever happened to that other film. The big debut film called,
"Rubber".
Ashlyn Gere: Rubber. Well that's still in the works. There was a little accident, a
few script rewrites. We're hoping to get it completed by the end of the year.
I don't know if it's going to be done or not. That's Rob's film, you'll
have to ask Rob about that one.
Q: Now is it as crazy around Extreme as everybody says it is. The stories
that you hear coming out of there. "Everybody lives at Tommy Byron's house,
everybody just signs on and then immediately scrambles away, Rob getting into
fights, Rob going down to Brazil and then getting chased out of Brazil, guns,
." I mean, the Mob movies don't have anything to even compete with the
stories they say about Extreme.
Ashlyn Gere: Can you believe it.
Q: (Shocked) I thought you were going to say it's all true!
Ashlyn Gere: (Laughing) Most of the stories are true!
And I have seen some of them. But um, Rob and Tommy are really pulling
together. They got a really good core of people. Of course they had a few
problems in the past with some of the talent and you know that happens in all
the companies.
Q: This has been one of the most relaxed sets we have ever been on.
Ashlyn Gere: Thank you.
Q: Most of the time, we are told to, "Stand right here. You shoot this and
I'm going to tell you what you can and can't shoot." We came here and the
director was like, "Where do you guys wanna be." Half the time he was like
doing his shot and then moving out of the way for us!
Ashlyn Gere: Thank you! I attribute that mainly to lane Parker. Sometimes in the
morning of a shot, it's a little hectic but he's pretty much a professional,
and likes everyone to be punctual. But I also give him credit, because he is
one of the most well researched and ready to go directors. When he walks onto
a set he makes everybody else's job easy and comfortable. He wants you to do
your work, but also wants you to be relaxed and ready to work. It's very nice
to get done shooting an hour early. I can't say that about most of the
directors in this business.
Q: What about the web stuff. I mean, for awhile there, you were part of the
big, big, BIG Internet sites. Then that kind of went away.
Ashlyn Gere: Yeah, unfortunately, Christy (Canyon), Janine and I had a legal problem
with AlleyKatz (website provider). So that's definitely over with for all of
us. I'm currently putting together my own site, but since I'm not home very
often and now with the Extreme contract, it's taking me much longer that I
thought it would.
Q: So the web thing might be coming along pretty soon.
Ashlyn Gere: Like I said, I'm trying to do it on my own. And a good friend of mine,
Lisa Lipps, don't know if you know her, is helping me out.
Q: We know her very well.
Ashlyn Gere: She has two sites and is teaching me how to do my own. She's wonderful
and making money on it. She has one of those 24-hour webcam sites. Can you
imagine? Aw, I couldn't do that.
Q: You don't want to put the cameras all up around your house so fans can
see you 24 hours a day.
Ashlyn Gere: No. It would be fine I guess, if you just loved living in your house all
the time. But I like to have a little bit of a life. You know I travel so
much, I like to have a little bit of privacy.
Q: You actually DO travel quite a bit.
Ashlyn Gere: I live in Las Vegas. I do movies over here. I dance on the road. I shot
for FOX-TV a lot, so I'm either her or in Vancouver, Canada. So the traveling
...agh! I have so many frequent flyer miles.
Q: You still do stuff for FOX-TV?
Ashlyn Gere: They have me up for consideration for two new pilots.
Q: Now, "Space: Above and Beyond" was very cool.
Ashlyn Gere: Thank you. Did you watch them often?
Q: Yes, when it was on FOX all the time. A favorite porn star being on
there, we gotta watch it. And you were the bad guy! That's the cool part.
Ashlyn Gere: I was the lead villain. Can you imagine that, even on Primetime, I get
hired as the bitch.
(Both laughing)
Ashlyn Gere: I'm just a bad girl, what do you want.
Q: And the guy's, who made the show, specifically brought you on the show
because they were fans of yours.
Ashlyn Gere: Yes.
Q: Of your adult stuff?
Ashlyn Gere: Yes. I was actually watching Ginger Lynn perform one night dancing at a
club. And I got a tap on my shoulder from the producer of the TV series. He
said, "Hello, I would like to have you on the show next season." I was like,
"Yeah, right!" and walked away from him. Anyway, to make a long story short.
He gave me his card and it said FOX TV Studios on it. I was like, Oh my God;
I just made a fool of myself. And we have been friends ever since that. It's
been 3 and 1/2 years now.
Q: Well, we'll keep looking for you on FOX-TV and definitely on more Extreme
stuff.
Ashlyn Gere: Yes you will. Thanks for talking with me.
Q: Our pleasure!
