Interview With Brandon Iron - January 31, 2003
E-mail Interview
PornstarEmpire.com: Tell us a little about your background, and how you got involved in the adult industry.
Brandon Iron: I am 34 years old with an unused English degree. From the age of , I was a pornophile of the highest order. I turned my hobby into my career and have not looked back. I had some horrible jobs in my 20's where I felt more exploited than at any time during my tenure in adult video. I got started in porn when I met Aja dancing at a bar. She referred me to an agent in Los Angeles. I went there, met him, took some photos, and never looked back. After paying some dues, I just, well, paid more dues! It took time to get where I am today. It feels good to think that I have lasted this long! I have been gainfully unemployed, so to speak, since 1997. By this I mean that I am getting paid to do things that I would gladly do for free. Note To Producers/Directors Who Currently Pay Me: Do not read the last statement!
Q: Do any of your friends or family back home know what you do for a living? What has been their reaction to it?
Brandon Iron: Yes, most of my friends and family know what I do for a living...although in different degrees. I don't tell my mom that I fucked Taylor Rain in the ass today or anything. Sometimes less is more. Everyone knows that I am very happy with the choices I have made with my life. Some of my closest friends with advanced degrees envy me. Go figure!
Q: Obviously, you were a performer before you directed any titles. What got you interested in directing your own stuff?
Brandon Iron: I became interested in directing after sitting on people's sets for hours and doing nothing! It bothers me that it takes 10 hours to shoot 40 minutes of sex! C'mon, people, this is not rocket science....it's porn! Open legs, insert cock! It is not complicated. It gets very complicated, however, when you work for holier-than-thou companies like VCA and Vivid. They make you wait and wait....and wait some more. They delude themselves into thinking that they are creating some sort of higher art. Let me tell you this, Taylor Hayes getting reamed may be pretty, but it shouldn't take all day to do it. Seriously, I am a highly motivated individual who soaks most things up like a sponge. I am also a compulsive sex-a-holic. I just feel that the most honest, real sex comes from 2 (or 10!) people doing what they want to do with each other. As a director, I am just the monkey who knows how to turn my Sony VX-2000 to "ON."
Q: You worked for Extreme Associates for a while before moving on to your own stuff and your new relationship with Red Light District. Extreme is noted for doing scenes that are a little edgier (some would say "rougher") than most studios...are their any projects or scenes you did with them that you look back upon and say "Maybe I shouldn't have participated in that"?
Brandon Iron: No, I do not have any regrets per se for any scenes I have done for any company. Surprise, surprise...but after 5 years the porn-odometer is rolling over 800 scenes now! I do know that I learn something new each time I have sex with a woman. I am a better performer for it...and a better lover in general. I have learned that it is far better to bring the energy to a slow, rolling boil than try to flash-fry a scene's energy with some karate chops to the face or a few well-placed kidney shots. Of course I wish I could turn back the clock on certain things. For example, the day that Kristi Myst was gangbanged for In The Days Of Whore. She was physically and emotionally traumatized that day. I saw her breakdown. It was not pretty. I participated in her humiliation and after she wiped the last stream of urine from her face, I was the one who felt ashamed.
Q: When fans see "Directed by Brandon Iron" on a title, what can they expect to get that they may not see anywhere else?
Brandon Iron: When my name is put on a product as either a performer or director, I want people to know that I did the best I could. I am not as consistent as someone like Erik Everhard, but I always try my best for whoever hires me. I am first and foremost a fan. I shoot what gets me off.
Q: When directing a movie for Red Light District or any other studio, do you get to hand-pick the talent that you'll be working with, or does the studio provide you with talent and you have to use who is provided?
Brandon Iron: Talent for Red Light District videos must be approved by Vince Vouyer, the head of production. He has a great eye for detail and quality, and he supervises the production of each title that is put out by the company in addition to his own lines for Vouyer Productions. When David Luger and I were in Prague, Budapest, and Montreal, we did the castings ourselves and got feedback from Vince back in LA.
Q: As you know, part of the reason we are doing this particular interview is to take a look at the different "gonzo" filmmakers currently in the industry. Aside from the standard industry definition, what does the term "gonzo" mean to you - and why do you think these kind of movies are so popular among adult fans right now?
Brandon Iron: Gonzo is a medium of expression that allows performers to be themselves. It is honest and visceral. I believe it is popular because it does not pretend to be something it is not. As a fan, I hated seeing "Randy West as Jake" and "Nicole London as Susie". Let's just let Randy and Nicole be themselves, OK? I want to see hot sex with a minimal of acting/pretension. The Brandon Iron Almanac predicts that gonzo will continue to erode into the market share of the robo-porn currently produced by Wicked, Vivid, and VCA. Don't want it, don't need it, can't masturbate to it.
Q: Recently, the industry has been under attack due to a PrimeTime Live program that aired a few weeks back - what is your take on the recent criticism the industry has been getting, and how would you respond to people who claim that young girls are coerced and manipulated into performing on film?
Brandon Iron: Primetime did what it had to do. Can you imagine Diane Sawyer telling the positive side of porn, that Belladonna continues to earn 6 figures a year. She is blessed with a beautiful body and she is making the most of it. Good for her. I believe that enough footage was shot and manipulated to tell the story they wanted told.
Mainstream is not adult-friendly, unless it's during sweeps. I look forward to the day where Jenna Jameson is profiled, chronicling her Club Jenna empire that is the envy of a lot of people. She is strong, successful, and under 30 years of age. I just worked in her latest production called "Desires". It was filmed at a mansion in Malibu and everything was first rate. Go Jenna!
Q: Can you tell us a little about the projects you are currently working on and the kind of material we can expect from you in 2003?
Brandon Iron: I have several upcoming projects that I hope will make a lasting impact on the industry. By lasting, I mean they will be talked about for the obligatory 15 minutes of fame. April 2003 marks the debut of Platinum X Pictures from Jewel DeNyle, Michael Stefano, Manuel Ferrara, Steve Holmes and myself. All productions will be owned by the director based on the Evil Angel model. Quality sells. We have a lot to live up to. My first release, in April, will be "I Love It Rough". It will explore rough sex in various forms. All sex is consensual, of course, and I was very careful with the casting. All performers were interviewed, too. It is my best work yet, I believe. I will also do a foot/let fetish title. There will be a monthly release from each director.
Q: Finally, can you tell us if you have your own website yet, or a way in which fans can contact you? Do you have any message you'd like to pass along to your fans or those who enjoy your movies?
Brandon Iron: No, I do not have a website. People can e-mail me directly at brandoniron_99@yahoo.com. I respond to each e-mail personally. (Keep 'em short, please!) As for a message to fans, please give Platimum X Pictures a chance to earn your business. We realize that you have a lot of choices as to how to spend your porn dollar. We feel that we can exceed your expectations. This year, www.platinumxpictures.com will be launched to promote our releases.
